The floor of Tennessee Valley Precision Works hums with a different rhythm than it did five years ago. Sparks still fly from manual welding stations along one wall, but across the aisle, a bank of robotic arms now handles repetitive welds on brackets and housings destined for customers in the automotive and industrial equipment supply chains.
The Decatur manufacturer, founded by machinist-turned-owner Dalton Reeves, has spent the past two years gradually introducing automation to its production floor, a shift Reeves said was less about cutting jobs and more about freeing his most experienced welders for the complex, low-volume work that robots can't handle.
Automation as a Retention Tool, Not a Replacement
"I was worried when I brought this up with the crew that people would think we were trying to replace them," Reeves said. "What actually happened is our best welders got pulled off the repetitive stuff and put on the jobs that pay better and require more judgment calls."
Reeves said the company cross-trained several longtime employees to program and maintain the new robotic welding cells, turning positions that might have otherwise been eliminated into higher-skilled roles. He credits that approach with keeping turnover low at a time when many manufacturers across north Alabama are struggling to retain skilled labor.
The investment came after Tennessee Valley Precision Works saw a steady increase in orders for custom brackets, enclosures, and structural components used by equipment makers across the Tennessee Valley corridor. Reeves said the company had reached a point where manual capacity alone couldn't keep pace with delivery windows customers were requesting.
A Family Business Finds Its Footing
Reeves took over the company from his father, who started it decades ago as a small job shop doing repair welding for local farm equipment dealers. The business has since shifted almost entirely toward precision fabrication for industrial clients, a transition Reeves said took years of reinvestment in equipment and training.
"My dad built this place one contract at a time, mostly on handshake deals," Reeves said. "I've had to learn how to run it as something bigger than that, with real quality certifications and documented processes, without losing what made it work in the first place."
That balance has meant keeping the company's culture intentionally informal even as its client list has grown to include manufacturers well outside the immediate region. Reeves said he still walks the floor daily and prefers face-to-face conversations with his crew over email.
Training the Next Generation of Machinists
Beyond the robotics investment, Tennessee Valley Precision Works has partnered with a nearby community college to host apprenticeships for students studying machining and welding technology. Reeves said the program has become one of his most reliable sources of new hires, since students arrive already familiar with the shop's equipment and safety procedures.
"We can't wait around for fully trained welders to show up looking for a job," he said. "If we want people who understand our machines and our standards, we have to help train them ourselves."
Reeves said he expects the company to add a second robotic cell within the next year if order volume continues at its current pace, along with additional apprenticeship slots. For now, he's focused on making sure the expansion doesn't outpace the company's ability to maintain the quality reputation it has built over three decades.
"Growing too fast is how a lot of shops like ours get into trouble," Reeves said. "I'd rather add capacity a step behind demand than a step ahead of it."
