Inside a low-slung building tucked between two research parks near Redstone Gateway, engineers in white coats are testing star trackers meant to guide small satellites through orbit. The company behind them, Ridgeline Orbital Systems, has quietly grown from a five-person shop into one of Huntsville's more closely watched aerospace suppliers, and its founder says the city's talent pool is the reason it never considered leaving.
"There's a version of this company that gets built in a coastal tech hub, but it wouldn't have the workforce we need," said Marisol Kendrick, who founded Ridgeline Orbital seven years ago after leaving a larger contractor to build smaller, faster-to-produce satellite components. "Huntsville has a pipeline of propulsion and guidance engineers that most cities can't match."
A Second Cleanroom Opens This Fall
Ridgeline Orbital is finishing construction on a second cleanroom, roughly doubling the floor space dedicated to assembling attitude-control hardware for small satellites. Kendrick said the expansion was driven less by a single large contract and more by a steady climb in orders from companies building constellations for imaging, communications, and weather monitoring.
The new space will let the company run parallel production lines instead of queuing work through a single facility, something Kendrick said had become a bottleneck over the past two years. Along with the buildout, Ridgeline Orbital is hiring across several departments, including test engineering, supply chain management, and quality assurance.
"We turned down work last year because we simply didn't have the floor space to build it on time," Kendrick said. "That's not a position we want to be in again."
Building a Local Supply Chain
Part of Ridgeline Orbital's strategy has involved cultivating relationships with smaller machine shops and materials suppliers across north Alabama rather than relying solely on out-of-state vendors. Kendrick said that approach has cut lead times on custom brackets and housings from weeks to days in some cases, while also giving smaller regional manufacturers steady contract work.
"When you can drive twenty minutes to talk through a tolerance issue with a machinist instead of emailing a supplier three states away, you move faster," she said. "That matters more in this industry than people realize."
The company has also leaned on partnerships with local universities to build a pipeline of graduating engineers familiar with its testing protocols before they ever apply for a job. Several current employees came through internship programs that placed them in the cleanroom during their final year of coursework.
Looking Toward a Broader Customer Base
While much of Ridgeline Orbital's early work came from a handful of anchor customers, Kendrick said the company is now courting a wider range of satellite operators, including several building constellations for agricultural monitoring and disaster response. She sees that diversification as essential to weathering the industry's boom-and-bust contract cycles.
"You don't want your whole business tied to the fortunes of one program," Kendrick said. "We've spent the last two years making sure that if one customer's launch schedule slips, it doesn't sink us."
Local economic development officials have pointed to companies like Ridgeline Orbital as evidence that Huntsville's aerospace sector extends well beyond its largest, most recognizable contractors. Smaller firms building specialized components, they argue, are what keep the broader supply chain resilient.
For Kendrick, the expansion is also personal. She started the company in a converted warehouse with secondhand equipment, she said, and watching it grow into a facility with two cleanrooms and a payroll of nearly seventy employees still catches her off guard some mornings.
"I still walk in some days and I'm surprised by how much space we have now," she said. "But then I remember how much we needed it."
